The Voters Roll
Voters Roll
Local Authorities throughout the UK are responsible for running elections in their area. To enable this they have all created lists of all the eligible people in their Local Authority Boundary area. This list is called the Electoral register, but is more commonly referred to as the voters roll.Financial institutions including mortgage lenders as part of their underwriting process will check to see if you are registered on the voters roll at the address (or addresses) that you have told them you live at. Being registered on the electoral roll is important as it helps the lender to verify your identity and to confirm that you actually exist.
Not being registered on the voters roll can mean that a lender has difficulty in matching your credit information with you as an individual. This can have a serious affect on the terms you are offered credit on, or even being refused credit completely.
The Electoral roll is published once a year usually in October, therefore it is important when you receive any information regarding the electoral roll from your local authority, you respond to it as quickly as possible.
However if you move into a new property or change your name after the Electoral Roll has been published for that year, you can add or change your details by contacting your local authority. Local authorities can now update the Electoral roll monthly.
